The Goodbye | MaKai | LoK
“It won’t go down!” Bolin shouted to Korra before grunting as he dodged a thrown object. “I know!” She shouted back as she, Bolin, Mako and Asami fought against one of Kuvira’s robot soldiers. “What are we going to do?! If we don’t take it down then it’ll get out and kill innocent lives!” Asami said. They had been going around taking out the robot soldiers that Kuvira sent out around the city. So far they had been successful, but this one was stronger than the rest, and a bit bigger. The person inside it was relentless too.
There was an explosion from above, opening the roof up to the sky. A battle cry followed by flames. The robot fell from the force of the debris and flames. Mako’s eyes widened. “Kai!!” He called out. The bender who had joined in was the criminal who’d been on the top of the Police’s Most Wanted list for a couple years now. “If you want them, you’ll have to go through me!” She snarled. She looked older than she did when she and Mako last saw each other. She had grown out her hair.
Kai kept the robot distracted while the others attacked it. “Where the hell have you been?!” Mako shouted over to the female. She smirked. “Around. I was looking for you guys! You are hard to find, surprisingly!” she shouted back with a small laugh. “What about you?” she asked. “Everywhere. This Kuvira chick has been keeping us busy. We could’ve used your help, y’know” He chuckled. Kai gave him a look before playfully rolling her eyes and turning her attention back to the robot.
The battle pursued until the robot had activated it electricity sticks. It swung them around, almost landing a blow on Korra, but Kai shoved her out of the way, taking it instead. She cried out as electricity shocked through her body. The others called out as she grabbed onto the stick and channeled electricity through her and sent it into the robot. She yelled as she was shocked harder, and in return shocked the robot, starting to burn out it’s circuitry. “Kai! Let go! It’s going to kill you!” Mako yelled, his eyes wide as he rushed to pull her back from the robot.
But he was too late. The robot blew up, sending metal and wires every where. A body lay against a wall, belonging to the robot’s operator, he was dead. Another body lay in the middle of shrapnel, raggedly breathing. Mako and the others rushed towards it. Kai blearily opened her dulling eyes as Mako dropped to his knees and held her in his arms. “D-…Did I do…g-good?” she asked weakly. Mako nodded. “Y-Yeah you did real good, Kai…” he choked out, tears already forming in his dark eyes.
The wounded woman hummed faintly. “Good…At l-least now I can say I did s-something good in my l-life…” she wheezed. Mako clenched his jaw. “I’m sorry…M-Mako…for the things I s-said and did all those…y-years ago…” she murmured, her body already starting to grow cold. “I already forgave you, you idiot…I could never stay mad at you.” Mako said. She chuckled faintly as a few tears rolled down her pale cheeks from her dull eyes as they closed. “Thank you…” she then fell silent
“Kai? Kai! You gotta stay awake, okay? Help is coming, just stay with me!” Mako begged, shaking her gently. Kai coughed and her body temperature continued to drop. “Thank y-you for be-being my friend, M-Mako…Take care of th-them…” her head fell against his chest. She could hear his strong heartbeat and she smiled. She could go knowing he was safe and alive. “Kai please…s-stay with me…I need you…” Mako sobbed, his forehead resting on her head. Her body now was ice cold and there was no longer a heartbeat. There was just a pale lipped smile.
The man continued to sob in loss before a faint glowing caught his attention. The glow was coming from Kai’s stomach before it morphed into a small, little flame, which then turned into a small dragon. It trilled as Mako held out his shaking hand. “Mako? What is that…?” Bolin asked quietly. More tears streamed down the older brother’s face. “Her fire….” he murmured before the dragon trilled again and Kai’s body started to disappear, the orbs of her form floating off before going out in a flicker then fade. The dragon lept off his hand and flared out it’s wings. The dragon then morphed bigger, into a person.
Before Mako knelt a fire version Kai, smiling. She gently held his hand, there was no burning feeling, just warmth. Before Mako could do anything, the figure leaned forward and planted her fire lips on his in a gentle kiss. And just as quickly as she had kissed him, she had pulled back and stood, still holding his hand. She whispered something, only audible to Mako’s ears. But anyone looking closely enough could see the words shared between them before the flames disappeared.
“I love you Mako. Goodbye.”
There. I recommend listing to Sleeping At Last’s cover of “Already Gone” by Kelly Clarkson as you read it. Makes it hurt a lot more.
