I’m honestly torn between Roddy being Soundwave’s cassette or Blaster’s cassette or Hot Rod is an independent cassette who needs no carrier looking after him despite Soundwave and/or Blaster making grabby hands at him every time they cross paths.
I definitely enjoy the mental image of someone reaching out to cuddle Rod as a means to comfort themselves because he’s so small and warm and fits perfectly in their arms. (Meanwhile, Rodders is all [indignant muffled yelling] as they do this.) Drift is a definite guilty bot for this and maybe Nautica and Velocity because they never seen such a tiny bot before. Minis? They’re used to on their homeworld. A bot small as a human? New and cute!
(Also enjoy the mental image of Whirl deciding a great fighting technique is picking up Rodders during battle, yelling ‘THINK FAST’ without any warning and tossing the bot into the fray of something dangerous. It works 99% of the time since either Rod flames on and is a fireball of death or Drift is enjoying that fray to protect Rod from harm.)

im gonna be honest, i highkey didn’t realize blaster was cassette-compatible? i was thinking of roddy with soundwave’s cassette fam. like, mb he had a carrier in nyon and afterwards megatron goes “there’s someone i think you should meet” and introduces him to soundwave, who iirc is implied or mb even stated to be unusual for treating his cassettes as equals? i can see roddy fitting in with them, in the early days at least, before they’re actively at war.
and then he leaves the ‘cons maybe a few years into the war, signs up as an autobot and insists he doesn’t need a carrier, no blaster that doesn’t mean he needs to be convinced, it doesn’t mean he’s been traumatised or whatever mechs are making up now, it means he’s his own mech and he doesn’t need a carrier how hard is that to understand? he probably flares up a lot more as a cassette, at least around people he doesn’t know very well. he’s fine with his friends cuddling him, even if he grumbles about it, but if he doesn’t like or trust you and u try to grab him ur getting burnt. hell, that’s probably what inspires whirl to make the fastball special.
and then there’s later events to consider. would megatron railgun roddy into space with the matrix if he was an ex-con? i mean, probably, but i doubt soundwave would be happy about it. oh god, and imagine the looks on people’s faces when they find out the matrix bonded with a cassette, that’d be a sight to see. and how would roddy and ravage being estranged brothers effect mtmte s2? hell, how would roddy being an ex-con effect his relationship with megatron? i can see roddy and ravage pointedly avoiding each other for the first year or so (if im timelining right, megs is on the crew for 3-4 years?) but the ship is only so big, you can’t avoid someone forever.
i dont think they’d talk things out, per-se; more like get in a down and out brawl in the training room and air their grievances in the form of fists and flames and claws and teeth. they drag each other to medical afterwards and ravage’s next transmission back to soundwave includes a message from roddy, because yeah his family wound up on the wrong side of the war but the war is over and maybe it’s time they caught back up. (and then dying of the light happens and roddy has to watch his brother fade and know that there’s going to be one more forever-empty slot in soundwave’s chest compartment ahaha)
